EM Parallel FX Market Size: how big the parallel dollar market of a country is

How big the parallel dollar market of an emerging-market country is: an EMpulse estimate per country and month, as an interval (low / mid / high, USD a year) with a daily figure, a band (order of magnitude), a rank among the estimated countries and a confidence class — built from open aggregates and the index's own readings, never from a single figure.

Funds and investors sizing an opportunity, remittance and payment companies planning corridors, stablecoin issuers and treasuries weighing a market, researchers who need an independent, documented estimate with its interval.

EMpulse's own estimate per country and month from open aggregates and the index's readings: remittances through informal channels, the import financing gap, crypto and stablecoin channels, other channels. The interval (low / mid / high), the daily figure, the components and the exchange-control class are on Pro. One row per country; confidence counts the country-specific inputs behind the estimate.

Methodology

EM Parallel FX Market Size

  • What is estimated. The annual flow of a country's parallel foreign-exchange market in US dollars — the dollars bought and sold outside the official channels — as an interval (low / mid / high) and a central estimate, per country and month, plus a daily figure.
  • Components. remittances = recorded remittances received × the share that arrives through informal channels (a country figure where a study gives one, otherwise a regional prior) × a regime factor; imports = imports of goods and services × the share financed on the parallel market, which grows with the parallel premium over the official rate up to a cap (without a premium reading, the default share of the regime); crypto = GDP × a base share × the country's crypto-adoption tier × a regime factor; other = a share of the three (tourism, mis-invoicing of imports and exports, cash savings). The total is the sum times a calibration scale; the low and high bounds are the components' bounds summed.
  • Regime. Each country carries an exchange-control class — open, managed or restricted — entered from the IMF's annual report on exchange arrangements, or inferred from the index's 30-day median premium where no class is entered (at or above 10 % → restricted, at or above 2 % → managed, below → open).
  • Confidence. high / medium / limited from the number of country-specific inputs behind the estimate (remittances, imports, GDP, a country informal share, an adoption tier, a regime class, a premium reading, an exchange-based liquidity reading, the number of market sources, an independent benchmark).
  • Band and rank. The band is the order of magnitude of the central estimate (under $100 million a year, $100 million – $1 billion, $1–10 billion, $10–100 billion, over $100 billion); the rank orders the estimated countries by the central estimate, one row per country.
  • Daily figure. The annual central estimate spread over the days by a live proxy where one exists — the transaction-based liquidity index of the day (50 = the market's own norm → the plain annual / 365) or the exchange-based liquidity term — clipped to 0.5–2 × the plain figure; proxy: none otherwise.
  • Calibration and versions. Estimates are recomputed monthly and versioned: a changed figure is a new version, an unchanged one keeps its version. Independent estimates (central-bank and IMF studies, academic work) are recorded as benchmarks; the ratio of each benchmark to the estimate current at its publication is reported, and the median ratio moves the calibration scale when enough benchmarks exist.
  • Limits. This is a model estimate, not a measurement: no figure is published without its interval, and the free level publishes the band and the rank only. Not investment advice.
